Flexible Lightbox
Wordpress has a simple way to handle images on your blogs: you can upload, organize and insert images on your post with just 2 or 3 clicks. The application also creates thumbnails and medium sizes images automatically and allows you to insert them as a simple gallery into your posts and pages.
Integrate into your front-end nice javascript effects like Thickbox, Lightbox, Slimbox , Milkbox, Lightview is a plus, but would be better if you don’t need to touch the html code for it. That’s why the CMS technology exists.
After developing the plugin Wp ThickBox Integration, I decided to extend this features to “Lightbox” a cool jquery plugin to overlay images on the current page. In this case you can decide in the admin “images setting panel” if you want to “Open your images using Lightbox”.
Single Image Example
1. Upload ‘flexible lightbox’ folder to the ‘/wp-content/plugins/’ directory
2. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress.
3. And that’s it.
Screenshots
In this case I’m using the native gallery tag “gallery columns=2″ with the default styles.

hah, i just found the problem. maybe it’s the same for you other guys who can’t get it to work:
i’m using a twitter jquery integration on my blog. removing the library-script from the header makes the plugin work:
Now my twitter integration obviously doesn’t work anymore, but the lightbox does. hah
hi alain,
thanks for the great plugin. i have the same problem as Legacyblade – i’m using a custom theme (selfmade) and the lightbox won’t open up. instead, the image is opened in a browser window. i know this could be due to a ton of issues, but do you maybe have any suggestions on how to find the error? plugin works on classic theme btw.
thanks!
Thanks for this great plugin.
I have been able to publish it and to change something of the style.Some things I do not understand like changing them correctly.
I have changed in “jquery.lightbox-0.5.js” the value of “textImage” and “txtOf” by another language (Spanish) but not with himself that appear translated. That I need to do? I want to change “Image x of x” by “Imagen x de x”.
Gracias.
How can i make it work with old images
it works properly with new one’s but not with old ones
is there anyway to limit the display size of huge images?
please?
p.s. thanks for the great plugin
Hi
I’m really hoping to get this plugin working, since it seems perfect for what I’m trying to do — I think I’m having the same problems as rosenkrieger — I click open using lightbox — it adds a class=”lightbox” — and then nothing happens. Any ideas would be very much appreciated!
Cheers,
Martin
@Tony Dewhurst
hi… we have the same problem.. did ‘u find the solution for this issue?
we analyze the file flexible_lightbox.php at this line
”
ID\”>
..
and it seems to be correct, but it doesn’t work properly.
http://darknessrebirth.com/
There is a thumbnail on the front page, if you didn’t see it
(I’m still making the site, that’s why it’s so empty)
@KCA
Fixed in the new version.
hi..alain,
i am new for the wordpress…. i have installed the checkout plugin… please tellme how to use it..
@Legacyblade
Can you include a sample url?
Hello. I love how easy the plugin is to use. However, I have run into a problem. The custom theme I’ve installed (http://www.infocreek.com/webdesign/aspire.html) doesn’t seem to work properly with it. It works just fine on word press’ default theme, but when I click on an image using the custom theme it simply navigates the browser to the image). If anyone has some ideas on how to fix this issue, that’d be great
Hi,
I have managed to intergrate plugin, but i cant get lightbox to show single images. ( rel tag )
I have 2 pics on one page, which I want to show seperately.
Hi everyone,
I want to hide “image 2 of 20″ detail. How can I fix it?
I have a Turkish website and Image 2 of 20 isn’t write on my pictures.
Thanx.
Wordpress is really great!!
@Knall
Yes, the plugin shows the original image size. Its better if you rezise it before upload it.
Thanks.
Hello,
its a great plugin! I have a question : Who i can Rezize the Image ? when i show me the pic – it´s to big!
sorry for my english, greets from germany
Love the Plugin but When i open a single image it allows me to scroll through over posts pictures is this an easy fix?
VG plugin, just what I needed !…my donations in the MAIL….
Just For info:
When you got your wordpress in a subomain, and the worpdress address in the root, the plugin does not take it in consideration, so it can’ t call the js.
Maybe something wrong in my installation.
Whatever i fixed it by going at the end of flexible-lightbox.php” and changing the call to “get_bloginfo(’wpurl’).”
great plugin.
is there a way to use it with nextGEN ?
First, this is a GREAT plug-in and will donate once the below questions help complete my gallery. Though (maybe) basic, I’ll need some comprehensive instructions. Thanks!
1. Have 2 spaces between each picture in the gallery
2. Have a 1 pixel border around each picture in the gallery
3. Remove the title when the lightbox opens up after clicking a picture

Thank you again!
Great! I’m just starting my blog and I’m sure your plugins will be really useful for me. Thanks!
@Jeremiah Shaw
In a future version I would like to include caption or description options. But, I’m very busy now.
@Frank
This is not a simple trick, you can try any jquery plugin integration that open IFRAMEs for example “Thickbox”.
Thanks,
Alain
Was this question ever answered? I would love to know how to do this.
Do you think Lightbox will have the possibility in the near future to work with images hosted at a 3th party website like photobucket? Hosting all images i use on my website is very expensive in used bandwidth. On photobucket i can host both a large version of an image and a smaller, thumbnail size version… I really hope this will be possible in the near future!
Thanx,
Frank
Great Plugin! i was just wondering if you can help me figure out why the background overlay that covers my site background sometimes does not fill the entire background when i open a image that requires scrolling…its really bothering me. lol any help would be great! thanks!
Dennis
here is the URL for reference.
http://juicylucyrecords.com/home/?page_id=83
it usually happens to the images at the bottom of the gallery.
Oh, I solved this by adding one more selector funftion jQuery(’a.lightbox’).lightBox in flexible-lightbox/js/lightbox_call.js file, just by copying that function call with contents and renaming just jQuery(’a.lightbox’).lightBox to jQuery(’a.lightboxNext’).lightBox . And in nextGen settings, under effects tab I added “custom” and typed class=”lightboxNext”.
Hope this will help someone else.
Thanks for plunin, I like options for adding lightbox efect in image addition.
It shows not only arcticle images, it includes sidebar images (from nextgen plugin sidebar widget) in the same set too. Would be fine, if it would be possible to seperate those in two sets – article images and sidebar images.
hi there
i like the option to have images open without lightbox – just the default gallery style. but is there a way to do this with whole galleries, not just individually inserted images?
ideally i’d like the option to used lightbox or just the default for whole galleries.
thanks
Hi
I am using your lightbox on 2.8.4 Wordpress and your plugin lightbox 1.02,
well it is wired..sometimes it works and the light box pops up, but sometimes it does not work,
it is the same on this site..sometime the image do what it should do and sometimes it just opens the image in another window, this is very annoying.
Any idea why that is? Is your plugin not compatible, or not working properly?
Alon
i tested here, with and without the Flexible Lightbox Plugin, the images are are below one of other ( like a column ). i got sucess only when i removed the centered align. when i put all align = left or right, i got the “row” of images, but i need them centered ( like in this page, at “Screenshots” section.
i think it’s because the theme, i send email to them but no answer. can u help me to resolve it?
my blog has been at localhost yet. thanks so much
@benedito gonzalez
Yes the style.css of your theme or any other added.
if you disable the plugin your thumbnails are find?
Send me a link where you are using the plugin.
thanks alain, are you saying the .css ? i looked it vut i didnt find. can i send you some images to see it? if possible, send me a email, thank you
@benedito gonzalez
You need to check the styles of your theme. Maybe you are overwriting or missing the gallery styles.
hello, i am using the flexible lightbox, but i didnt get to put the thumbs side by side, like a row. all images are below one of other. how can i put several thumbs into a row:?
@Ernesto
This is just the value of the “title” attribute in the html image link inserted. you can delete it on your html, do not include title to your image when you insert it or edit the plugin to eliminate it for all the images.
Alain,
I’d like to delete the name of the file that appears in the left/bottom side of the slideshow, just above the x of y images. How do I do that?
Thanks in advance
@alain
Are you including the link to the images before inserting them into the post?
Do you see the lightbox class in the links elements?
Can you include a sample link?
Thanks.
Hi Alain,
thank you for simple and pretty working plugin. I think I don´t need anything more, I have rebuild several posts and published. But there is a bug maybe that makes me not able to use it:-( and that´s really pity. When I execute some image from the row (gallery) it has a title under picture, but the second one and the others no – suddenly the white part with text and close button is missing forever. I use WP 2.8.4 and your plugin is the only one activated.
Thanks for help!

@georage
You can try this:
- Go to the jquery lightbox plugin page and download the plugin. http://leandrovieira.com/projects/jquery/lightbox/
- Inside of the package you will find /js/jquery.lightbox-0.5.js open it and try to find something like: $(’body’).append(.
- This line contain the html that is include on the page when you open an image.
- After < - div id="lightbox-container-image-box" -> you can insert something like:
< -div style="background-color: white; padding-top: 10px; height: 20px;"->your text< -/div->
- Copy all the content of this file and replace the content of the /plugins/flexible-lightbox/js/jquery.lightbox-0.5.pack.js.
Thanks for your donation.
Alain,
Thanks again for the plugin. It works great. However, I would like to CENTER some text atop the lightbox.
Is there a way to modify a script so the top of every lightbox has this in small text … “Press ‘x’ to close, ‘n’ for next image, ‘p’ for previous image”
Thanks, I donated via paypal on aug. 14.
@Peter Steen Høgenhaug
Can you please include a link?
Hi there,
I have succesfully made Flexible Lightbox work on several sites, but suddenly I can’t make it work on one of my sites. When I upload an image, I choose “Open using LightBox”, and the class lighbox is added to the link around the image. However, when I click the image, it just opens as it would without the plugin. Has anyone else experienced this problem, and what did you do?
I really like the plugin – it works easily and beautifully, BUT how can I get captions to show?? currently only shows title and I like the caption to show below the title line (and before image x of y). possible?
Really perfect plugin!
This plugin is the best. So simple to install and use. It does exactly what I needed. Thanks!
I’ve installed and activated Flexible Lightbox and it works, sort of. My images are huge, it displays the image way too big with horizontal and vertical scroll bars. Is there a way to configure Lightbox to resize the image to fit within the available screen space so the reader can see the entire image on the screen?
Thanks,
Maggie
@georage
You can try putting your individual image inside a div with class “gallery”. At this way the image will be included in the gallery round.
Something like:
< div class="gallery" >
< a href="image url" > < img src="thumbnail url"/ >< /a >
< /div >
Is there any way to link an image to a gallery? My template has one photo embedded in a story, and the gallery at the bottom of the story. I would like the reader to be able to click the image embedded in the story and load the gallery instead of merely enlarging the single image.
Here is an example page … http://www.smartyweb.org/2009/08/13/east-india-company-hostile-takeovers-17th-century-style/
@Markus
The pluging shows the title that you assign to the image, by default wordpress use the filename as title by default.
Thanks.
Hi!
I’m using your beautiful plug-in on my blog. The only thing I can’t work around is how to make the plugin to display the image title or alternate text instead of the filename.
Thank you for any advice! And thank you for this useful plugin.
Hi
Really need this plug in to work…I have a dozen or so galleries on my site. However when I select the image to open at at certain size, it DOESN’T. Many of the images are correctly sized but others aren’t (they are HUGE). Isn’t there a way to format this? Please help!
Visit me on http://www.moonlightvizslas.com
Thanks
I got this to almost work perfectly. My image is not loading in the lightbox. I’m using wp 2.8 can you help me out ? http://solarbluseth.com/index.php/wordpress-plugin-lightbox-2-in-action
@hueen
That’s true I’ll include that on the next revision.
For now you can open this file “/flexible-lightbox/js/lightbox_call.js” on the plugin folder and comment the line that start with “jQuery(’.gallery a’).lightBox({” using “//”.
Thanks,
Alain
how can i disable lightbox for a native gallery? the only lightbox option is for single images, and only when i enter them directly into a blog post, which doesn’t help. wp version 2.8.1. thanks!
Hi…
Same for me:
1. I have WP 2.7.1
2. I installed your plugin
3. It shows up when entering a new article
4. If I look into the HTML it does not say “lightbox” anywhere eventhough I said “Open in Lightbox Yes”
5. When I manually change the HTML code class to “lightbox” it also does nothing at all
How can I do to make the plugin working?
Hello,
I have also the same problem as rosenkrieger. All goes well, but after inserting the image the img tag does not contain any extra info for loading Lightbox. I also use WP 2.7.1
Regards
@Robert
This is added on the wordpress gallery tag you can read more on the tag documentation.
http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_the_gallery_shortcode
I’m having trouble with getting more than one column. I understand your line about “gallery columns=2,” but where is this added?
Hi!
Am having a problem with “lightbox-image-details-currentNumber” display.
During the creation of a page, I uploaded 7 images, and then deleted 3. There are now only 4 images on the page, and the other 3 images have also been deleted from the Media Gallery.
However, when the lightbox for the page is invoked, it shows all 7 images. This is visible to all users, and does not have to do with the Browser Cache.
How can I clear the deleted images so they don’t display in the Lightbox?
Thanks for the great plugin!
Peter
@Federico
Thank you, I will update it.
I have corrected a bug in you plugin when the WP installation is located in a separate folder. Please contact me so I can send you the updated file or just replace the get_bloginfo(’url’) calls in the flbox_head() function for get_bloginfo(’wpurl’)
Thanks!
Lightbox works fine when your logged in as the administrator, but if I log in as another administrator/ user it does not work.
Any ideas?
Sorry, just another question, somehow the lightbox does not show any title/caption of the image. May I know what I need to know so that it’ll display the title of the image? Thanks!
Hi,
May I know how to loop the lightbox? i.e. after showing the last image, it allows for the next click to go to the first image. Is it possible?
I just noticed, only when I upload images from my computer I get the option to use lightbox. Not for URL’images.
Hi Alain,
i have installed ..uninstalled…reinstalled sevral time.
i see th eradio button to ask for Lightbox feature. But yj eimage is always installed with the classical <img class=” without the Lightbox class.
i have SEO Title tag installed.
thx for your help
hi alain
indeed i missed out on tht part!
thanks for the help
works great now!
@Lise
Can you not see top example of this page working on Chrome?
@rohit
Hi, in this url I dont see the link on the image. Before inserting the image on your post you need to include the “Link Url” in this case just click on “File Url” and wordpress will fill out this field.
The lightbox works with the “a” html tag.
Thanks.
hey,
i tried using ur plugin, but it wont work. dont know if this is due to the theme that i m currently using or what. would be great if you could help me out.
you can follow this link, http://bushahrtimes.com/archives/324 (i ticked the option of ‘open using lightbox’ for the image in this link)
thanks
This plug-in is not working in Google Chrome, any idea why?
Hi there!
Is there a way to translate the “Image x of X” down at the left? To my own language..
Great plugin by the way!
Thanks.
Hi!
Thanks for great plugin!
In my case i’m using it on non english blog.
I want to ask, if the only way to translate this words “CLOSE”, NEXT, PREV is to edit the .gif files? I’m not realy good at graphics, so i hope there is some other solution…
take care
tom
Hi there, I’m using Lightbox, thanks for developing it.
With WP 2.7.1. I have noticed a strange behaviour:
- when inserting an image for the first time in a post, the WP image dialog box shows the radio buttons “use lightbox to open…yes/no”.
- when MODIFYING image attributes, the lightbox options are missing.
How is that?
Another question:
Could it be possible to have a custom lightbox version that works in this way:
- on mouse over, zoom the image
- on mouse not over, back to thumb
- on mouse click, go to URL (post, image full screen, you name it) if any
Regards
@ncj
I resolved this myself by putting sizing into the stylesheet
I have one more question? How do you control the size of the actual image in when I use wordpress
Scenario, a non web person uploads an image in add media, Wordpress “crunches it” and has 3 versions. When I select the image, it chooses the largest version instead of the medium version. How do I change that
See http://www.pleasantstreetchurch.org/wordpress/?page_id=165 click on the church sign
I would like the thumbnail to be sized very small and then once its opened, I would like it to be larger. How would I do that?
@Morten
You just need to include the class=”lightbox” in your links. Something like:
a href=”your image url” title=”the title” class=”lightbox”
Thanks,
Alain
Hi
Works great for me in 2.7.1 – but – is it possible to get it to work on featured images as well? You know – images that are not inserted via the Insert image, but where you make a custom field called image and then copy the URL into another field? Is it possible and if yes – how? Right now it just opens in a new window, wich looks a bit old-fashioned.
Morten
@Emil
Hi Emil, the plugin works for all the attached images, you don’t need to upload them again, just need to go into your images setting, define the “Link Url” and insert the image on the post. Or include the class “lightbox” in the link of the image if you are HTML familar.
Thanks,
Alain
Hi! Everything works now.
Two questions:
1. Is there any way to use the plugin on older images? Or do I have to upload them again?
2. A watermark would be nice – any ideas how to implement this – separate plugin, custom php etc?
Thanks, my site looks much nicer now!
Hey love this plugin but it seems to mess up my theme, I keep returning this error
Error: element.style is undefined
Source File: http://www.jyoungest1.com/wp-content/themes/jyoungest1/js/combo.js
Line: 13
but when I disable it or any lightbox it works fine. I am using the foilage-mod theme from this link http://5thirtyone.com/wordpress-foliage-mod-theme.
I am a animator not a programmer
any help would rock guys.
Hi, great plugin, but how i can i with and only one time change all my pictures in my site with this propieties, or i need to chenge one by one for use this new implementation?
Thanks and wow!!! plugin.
FcoMG
@Artur
For the single post the plugin open all the link/images that have the lightbox class included. Its because the way that the jquery lightbox plugin works:
http://leandrovieira.com/projects/jquery/lightbox/
Thanks,
Alain
Hi, I have a problem with Flexible Lightbox. Why is it opens all files on the page and not only in the article? For example all foto on the main page. http://bmwzoom.ru/
Emil, Can you please include a sample URL?
Thanks,
Alain
It doesn’t for me either. Is there any other plugin which could interfere such as NextGen Gallery?
(Tried to deactivate it – no success. I’d prefer not to have to uninstall it just for testing…)
I’m in 2.7.1
Cool plugin. I think that it’s very useful!
Works perfectly for me on 2.7.1
Awesome plug in
Thanks!
@rosenkrieger
I tested it until the 2.7 version.
Maybe there is some interaction with other plugin,
Do you have javascript errors?
Send me the URL, if you want, to see what is wrong on the front-end.
Thanks,
Alain
Thank you for the plugin, but for some reason it won’t work for me
1. I have WP 2.7.1
2. I installed your plugin
3. It shows up when entering a new article
4. If I look into the HTML it does not say “lightbox” anywhere eventhough I said “Open in Lightbox Yes”
5. When I manually change the HTML code class to “lightbox” it also does nothing at all
What am I doing wrong?!
Best regards
